Readers Theater Upcoming Event in May & June 2024

We are proud to announce that we have been asked to participate in Deschutes Public Library’s “A Novel Idea…Read Together” 2024 program, which is the largest community reading project in the state of Oregon.  The idea behind the project is very simple: pick a great book, engage the community with a month of programming highlighting  themes in the book, and wrap up with a visit from the author.  Last year over 15,000 participants attended 31 programs book discussions and the final author events.

In May 2024, A Novel Idea will celebrate Emily Habeck’s debut novel  “Shark Heart- A Love  Story.” This intergenerational love story begins with newlyweds Wren and her husband, Lewis- a man who loves theater and is transforming , over the course of nine  months, into a great white shark. This unforgettable story swirls with life’s perennial questions, finding joy admits grief and creating a meaningful life.

CTC’s participation will be reading Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play “Our Town” which debuted in 1938.  Why “Our Town,” you may ask to be included in 2024’s “A Novel Idea….Read Together” program?  The answer is simple: Mr. Wilder’s theme is also the age-old  contemplation on the circle of life with emphasis on love, family, life and death.  In “Shark Heart…A Love Story” Lewis is a high school theatre teacher who has his students perform “Our Town” as his last act before he transforms into a great white shark.  Mr. Wilder’s 1938 play and Ms. Habeck’s 2023’s debut novel both generate a central meaningful theme … perhaps we don’t fully appreciate life while we are in it.

The dates for our community reading of “Our Town” will be Sunday, May 5th from 2:00PM to 5:00PM at the Downtown Bend Library and the second reading will be May 8th, 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the East Bend Library.  We will also have a performance of the last act of “Our Town” at Caldera High School on June 1st at 6:00pm.

Please join us for the reading of “Our Town” with discussion of both literary pieces next month. We would like to make 2024’s “A Novel Idea …Read Together” the best yet!
