What to Expect at an Audition
Auditioning can feel intimidating, especially if it’s your first time.
Here’s what you can expect and how to prepare so you can walk in feeling ready.
Before the Audition
Read the Audition Notice
Each production is different. Review the audition dates, character information, and any preparation requirements before attending.
Prepare Your Materials
If the audition notice asks you to prepare a monologue, song, or other material, have it ready before you arrive.
Know Where to Go
Check the audition notice for the location and plan to arrive a few minutes early so you have time to check in.
At the Audition
1. Check In
When you arrive, check in and complete any forms provided. You may be asked for basic contact information and details about your availability.
2. Wait for Your Turn
Auditions may be individual or in groups. There may be some waiting, so relax, get comfortable, and be ready when your name is called.
3. Audition
When your name is called, you’ll perform the material requested in the audition notice. You may read scenes, sing, perform a monologue, or work with other actors depending on the production.
4. Take Direction
The director may ask you to try something again in a different way or read with someone else. That’s a normal part of the audition process and doesn’t mean you did anything wrong.
After the Audition
Casting Decisions
Casting timelines vary by production. The director or production team will let auditioners know how and when casting decisions will be communicated.
If You Aren’t Cast
Casting depends on many factors, and there are often more auditioners than available roles. We encourage you to audition again—another production may be just the right opportunity.
