JACK LUDWIG — Early to mid-30s. Jack is a thoughtful, reserved Army doctor stationed in Oregon during World War II. Intelligent, compassionate, dryly funny, and sometimes adorably awkward, he is far more comfortable caring for others than talking about himself. Through his correspondence with Louise, Jack gradually reveals a warm, deeply feeling man beneath his careful exterior. The actor playing Jack should be able to balance understated comedy with sincerity, vulnerability, and increasing emotional openness. This is a beautifully layered role for an actor who can make quiet moments as compelling as the larger ones.

LOUISE RABINER — Mid-20s to early 30s. Louise is a spirited, stylish New York actress and dancer with big Broadway dreams, quick wit, and an irresistible sense of humor. Outgoing, imaginative, and delightfully direct, she brings energy and color into Jack’s more ordered world. Beneath her confidence and theatrical flair, however, is a woman capable of great tenderness, insecurity, courage, and emotional depth. The actor playing Louise should have strong comic instincts, excellent storytelling ability, and the ability to move naturally between exuberant humor and genuine vulnerability.
